A Colourful First Birthday Cake Smash in Winnipeg

First birthdays are a fun milestone to photograph because no two children react to a cake quite the same way. For this Winnipeg studio session, we started with a few simple birthday portraits on a colourful candy-themed set before bringing out the cake.

That gave us a mix of clean milestone portraits and the wonderfully unpredictable expressions that followed once the cake was within reach.

Before the Cake

Before introducing the cake, we spent a few minutes creating some simple first-birthday portraits. A stuffed animal gave her something familiar to hold and interact with while she settled into the colourful set.

Starting this way also gives us clean portraits before the cake comes out — because once the smashing starts, there is usually no going back.

The Cake Arrives

Then it was time for the cake. Rather than expecting an immediate smash, I let her explore it at her own pace. Those first reactions — curiosity, cautious touches and the realization that something new has appeared in front of them — are often some of the best moments of the session.

Every child reacts differently, so there is no need to force a particular expression or moment. The goal is simply to give them time and photograph what happens naturally.

The First Taste

It didn’t take long for curiosity to turn into a first taste. A little icing on the fingers soon became both hands in the cake, and the perfectly clean setup gradually started looking much more like a cake smash.

This is where I keep photographing rather than trying to control every moment. Tiny expressions, messy fingers and the pauses between bites are all part of the story.

Letting the Mess Happen

By the end of the session, the cake had definitely lost the battle. With icing on her hands, crumbs everywhere and plenty of personality coming through, some of the most expressive photographs happened once everything stopped being neat.

Some babies dive straight into their cake while others take their time. Either way, I keep the session relaxed and follow their lead so the photographs reflect their real reactions rather than a performance for the camera.
